Mary Peters Awards 2010
The sporting achievements of Ulster's young athletes were rewarded recently during the latest round of Linwoods Sporting Excellence Awards. The Linwoods Awards are administrated by the Mary Peters Trust and, despite her demanding schedule, Dame Mary insisted on personally congratulating the latest winners. Mary praised their success by saying; "It is a true delight to see young sports people achieve such high standards of excellence and Linwoods Foods is to be congratulated for helping the Trust to encourage top sporting achievement in Ulster with these awards.
University Judo
Intervarsity Success for NIJF players Players from QUB, UUJ and UUC took part in last weekend’s Judo intervarsity hosted by the National University of Ireland Galway. The event was staged at the new and luxurious Kingfisher Recreation Centre in Galway on Saturday 20 February. The QUB Captain Ross Scott won gold medals in both the under100kg and open events. Ross also won best throw of the day and best overall player. Sara McDaid (QUB) won the under 63kg and Open events in addition to being voted the best female player of the day. Sean O'Doherty QUB) won the silver medal at under 81kg and the bronze in the Open category. Sean was also voted best male player award. French student Julien Gsell won a bronze in the under 73kg with a display of nice traditional style judo and winning his first fight in 20 secs and the second in 10 seconds. Unfortunately Julien then relaxed and was thrown by the eventual winner. After 2 more good fights Julien finished with the bronze medal. Beginner Adam Reilly (QUB) won a well deserved bronze medal in the Lower Kyu 73kg+ category. In addition to players the NIJF supplied Head referee Jim Toland accompanied by Lisa Bradley and Gavin Abel who kept the refereeing side moving forward. NIJF Table Official Paul O’Doherty also made a valuable contribution to the event. The NIJF officials were accompanied by Irish Officials who included Frank Trainer, the IJA President.
