10 Pre-Cadet & Cadet players from the NIJF travelled to Edinburgh for the Sportif International Tournament & Training Camp held over the Easter weekend. The Tournament had over 500 players from across Britain & Europe including teams from France, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Norway & Belgium. The NIJF team claimed 4 medals, all in the Pre-Cadet age band, Grace Ewing claimed Silver in the +63kg category, and there were Bronze medals for Kiah Reid (-40kgs), Matthew Elliott (-60kgs) and Bradley (-66kgs), Kirstie Strouts-McCallion narrowly missed out on a medal finishing in 5th Place. There were no medals in the Cadets, however there were strong performances from James Reid who was placed 9th and Daniel Mayhew who finished in 5th place. Laura Williamson also performed well winning her 1st contest but unfortunately injured her shoulder in her 2nd contest and had to withdraw.
After the tournament there was a 3-day training camp lead by 5 high profile coaches: Nuno Delgado (Portugal), Olympic, World & European medallist, Kim Christiansen (Denmark), National Cadet and U20 Coach for Denmark, John Buchanan (GB), Olympian & World medallist, Jesus Perves (Spain), Specialized ground-work expert and João Neto (Portugal) Olympian & World & European medallist.
All the players thoroughly enjoyed their trip away, they competed well in an International Tournament, trainied hard against quality players from across Europe and learned a lot from excellent coaches. A big thank you to Scott Mayne, Gary Jackson, Andrea Bingham and William Cully who gave up their Easter weekend to help give our players this great experience!
